I sense that AI's realtime listening skills lag behind its talking skills. A successful intuitive UI will require AI to understand free flowing conversation in a range of regional accents and dialects. I don't think we're quite at TARS level yet.
Good insights, as usual! In a previous post I argued that while conversational interfaces are indeed helpful in many domains, they aren't the end all be all of UI/UX and we actually may be on the verge of a different UX revolution, one adjacent to language models but not having chatbots at their center.
It's a premium post but I'm happy to give access to anyone interested in reading that side of talk ;)
Of course, there are many use cases that are less suitable to be handled through conversation. Nor do I foresee a sceenless future. I do feel conversational AI is a natural progression from everything that came before it.
At every stage technology has becomes more flexible and easier to navigate; removing many of the barriers that we originally had in communicating to computers what we want it to do for us.
For the first time in history, we will have digital entities that can act, make decisions, and perform tasks on behalf of us -- and anyone, not just programmers, will be able to communicate their needs and wants to these systems. That’s pretty revolutionary.
It is, for sure. And I think the real deal will be when they start interacting with all the existing computing infrastructure and interfaces we already have in place. No need to throw away decades of terrible software engineering now 😂
I am so excited to get my hands on some different interfaces.
I personally think one of the major obstacles to AI adoption in schools is the chatbot interface feature.
