On May 22, 2023, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever published a joint statement on the OpenAI’s blog that has been largely overlooked. A shame, because it was revealing in many ways.
The idea of regulation is a farce. Limited regulation will work. True regulation can never happen. A high percentage of corporations and an even higher percentage of governments act immorally/illegally in some way every day. There are always workarounds to laws and they will find them and for governments, no one will regulate them or have that ability. This is very different than regulating nuclear treaties. AI can be hidden in almost plain sight.
This is a very serious challenging problem and to date, there are no real solutions.
Can you ask OpenAI why they think we are interested in AGI? Lol
Nice post..very disappointing to see the profit motive crowd out the xRisk that they clearly think is there.
Brilliant take on the OpenAI dichotomy.
Thank you, much appreciated :)
