Makes sense to me. An organization like NYT, just like any other major company, needs to stay on top of technological progress that either can push their business forward or pose future risks. According to the website, their R&D covers a lot than just "AI", such as Computer Vision, 3D Web Technology, Spatial Journalism (whatever the hell that is 👀 ) Media Capture & Transmission, N.L.P., and Media Provenance.
What comes to mind is the New York Times having an AI lab.
If they literally feel they need to spend millions of dollars on that what do you suppose comes next for the Free press of the world?
